ISRAELI STATESMAN SHIMON PERES

I was saddened to learn of the death of Israeli President and Prime Minister Shimon Peres.  On assignment to Tel Aviv for CBS News, I covered a press conference at his party headquarters back in 1982.  Chaos reigned as news reporters including me were trying to set up our microphones to record the event.  Mr. Peres seemed very amused at the pandemonium and, as I was positioning my microphone at his desk from where he was to address the throng, he looked at me and said, "Welcome to Israel!!"  He just seemed like a regular guy who enjoyed a good laugh.

Welcome to Heaven, Sir.  Please Rest in Peace.  And thank you for your efforts to bring peace to the Middle East.  Godspeed.

GENERAL JOHN VESSEY, AN AMERICAN HERO

U.S. Army General John W. Vessey Jr. passed away recently at age 94.  A World War II veteran, who rose from the rank of private to four-star general and chairman of the joint chiefs of staff under President Ronald Reagan, General Vessey served for 46 years on active duty, a record for longest military service when he retired in 1985. He saw combat duty during World War II when he earned a battlefield commission as a second lieutenant and in South Vietnam when he was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross, the army's second highest award for bravery.

He is especially and gratefully remembered by the POW/MIA community for his service as a presidential envoy following his retirement working to resolve the fate of the POWs and MIAs from the Vietnam War.

Thank you, General, for your service to America.  Rest in Peace, Sir.

UNITY IN AMERICA

After Dallas, Minnesota, and Louisiana, Let’s Come Together

By Pattie Mosure

In Minnesota and Louisiana two black men are shot and killed by police.  Five police officers die in Dallas, Texas after being shot by a black assailant.  These incidents are tragedies not only for the victims and their families but of the country we love.

I write this not to assess blame or condemnation.  I don’t know what was behind the actions and motivations of those involved.  At this stage I don’t care.  What I do care about is bringing this country together.

I have a favorite expression:  Good comes from bad.  Maybe not always but we should try to make it so, particularly now when we remember the seven who have died in the tragic events of recent days.  Maybe this can turn us from the confrontation we see too much of these days to a determination to do better, to get along better.

President Obama got it right when he spoke at the memorial for the slain peace officers in Dallas.   “Scripture tells us,” the president said, “that in our sufferings there is glory, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope.  Sometimes the truths of these words are hard to see. Right now, those words test us.  Because the people of Dallas, people across the country, are suffering.”

Former President George W. Bush, who lives in Dallas, struck home as well.  “Too often we judge other groups by their worst examples while judging ourselves by our best intentions.”  He added, “And this has strained our bonds of understanding and common purpose.”

Let us take that suffering that President Obama spoke of and turn it into hope.  Let us use the horrible events of the past few days to inspire us to conciliation, to cooperation, to hope, and, yes, to unity as a nation.  Let us leave the divide behind.

Surely we are capable of doing this.  I hope all of us will listen to our fellow Americans more.   I believe we will be glad we did.

TO START WINNING THE WAR ON TERROR

PRESS RELEASE

Suggested Interview or Talk:  To Start Winning the War on Terror

MONTROSE, CALIFORNIA, 8 July 2016 – Are you looking for an expert to interview or speak before your group who will offer understandable ways to start winning this global War on Terror that today has Americans on edge and feeling unsafe right here at home?

Journalist Steve Patten has been reporting on terror since he first went to the Middle East in 1982 as a CBS News reporter.  He is the editor of Lee & Grant International, has reported extensively on conflicts around the world, speaks Arabic (he co-wrote the textbook, “Learning Iraqi Arabic”), and is intimately familiar with the culture of worldwide terrorism.

Should you decide to interview Steve and need an introduction for your report, or want to introduce him before your group, a suggestion:

"Steve Patten served with the U.S. Marine Corps in South Vietnam and then, as a CBS News reporter, searched for years for Vietnam War POWs and MIAs while covering wars around the world.  Accused by CBS News of being a CIA agent, Steve reports today on the War on Terror and the real root of evil we must confront to defeat the terrorists and keep America safe.   It is not what you see in the headlines.”

Please contact me if you want an interview or talk that will engage your audience and assure your readers, viewers, and listeners we can start winning this war now.

SUPPORTING DONALD TRUMP

I want to support Donald Trump.  But, as I write to him in the letter following in response to a request for contributions, I have to ask him for one consideration before I do.

Dear Mr. Trump:

I would be pleased to support you, including offering foreign policy advice based upon my experience as a journalist covering world affairs.  This offer is conditioned, however, on an apology I believe you should extend to Senator McCain and our POWs that I addressed on my blog at www.stevepatten.blogspot.com and that you can read by going to my 8 May 2016 blog entitled "McCain and Trump."

Consider, please just consider, the goodwill you would generate by a heartfelt apology to Senator McCain and our POWs.  I suggest to you it would mean a lot to the electorate in this country.

In regard to my qualifications on foreign policy advice, please go to:

Best wishes to you and the Trump campaign.

Make America Great Again

Stephen, without you, we never would’ve won.

This is your movement -- all I did was fight for you.

And I will continue to fight the special interest, Washington, D.C. power brokers and mainstream media who are trying to silence you and keep you down.

They think they can buy this election, but they’re DEAD WRONG. They have no idea who they’re up against. There is nothing stronger than the American people.

We won’t give up. We will keep fighting.

Contribute anything you can -- I mean it, anything -- toward our end-of-quarter fundraising goal to stand up to Crooked Hillary and her left-wing allies.
